A.K.A Livin’ the Good Life
(Reviewed by Damien Donnelly) - August 2001

A.K.A after making the semi-finals in Leg Up and just missing out on State of Origin glory, have released their first independent EP 'The Good Life' and not surprisingly, it is worth whatever they’re charging for it. The EP covers a lot of fairly new ground, especially for Australian punk. “The Good Life” EP seems to bridge the gaps where old school evolved to new school and grunge got thrown off some where in the middle. Harmonies in all the right places, cliché pop punk, but even some older style punk and some cool slow stoner stuff.

The Good Life
Review of Leg-Up entry - November 2000

We love the lyrics and the way A.K.A. deliver them - philosophical punk pop at its best, even if the playing is a teeny bit skewiff here and there. It's got soul, and is one of those songs we found ourselves singing days after hearing... (Julie Bennet)

Nice one boys. Catchy riff, a simple yet tidy effort. Not bad for a few northern beaches lads I reckon. (James M)

A.K.A - The Good Life
(Reviewed by Jasper Lee) - October 2001

Three piece Sydney popsters AKA produce the goods on their power punk/pop debut album "The Good Life". A band with plenty of youthful enthusiasm, one would probably remember such a bubbliness found from Noise Addict back in the mid 90s.

Starting from the "Best Times", the band dabble nicely in the whole boy meets girl punk pop formula that is infinitely catchy and well executed. Likewise "Monday Morning" is a nice light hearted ode to the crusty eyed weekenditis. The title track heralds to the nice power pop formula that was implemented by bands such as Swivel in the late 90s, and the same guitar amp fuzz is used to good effect across the EP.

A bold and unashamedly honest release, AKA produce a brand of power pop that has a vitality that has been missing from a lot on the scene at the moment. In areas the band loose a bit of direction, but this is a minor side point from an otherwise excellent debut effort.

As their website notes:

"A.K.A did NOT win Triple J's coveted Unearthed competition...

A.K.A was NOT asked to perform at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony...

A.K.A have NOT won a lifetime achievement Aria Award..."

...well, at least NOT yet. For now, the Sydney Northern Beaches trio are a garage band busy playing round the live circuit and trying to get their foot past the roll-a-door. Fed on a audio diet of MxPx, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Blink 182 and, did we mention Green Day, A.K.A have just released a self-titled 6 track EP of propulsive pop-punkin' tunes. They also have a beau website worth checkin' out.

And our receptionist/general troubleshooter Hannah reckons they totally rock her world.

A.K.A. are: Tim Mills (bass/vocals), Craig McNamara (guitar/vocals) and Luke McNamara (drums)
